Description
First African Baptist Church....by Reid Callaway
Cumberland Island Historic American Art
This humble, one room church was established in 1893 by African American residents of the island and their families. Some of the founders were born into slavery and emancipated following the American Civil War. The church served as a free place of worship and community center for the Northend community known as the Settlement. The church was rebuilt in the 1930’s. It was the site of the September 1996 wedding of John F. Kennedy, Jr. and Carolyn Bessette.
Located 14 miles North of the Sea Camp dock. Due to the distance, day visitors should not attempt to visit the church unless taking part in the Lands & Legacies Tour. The doors are open. This facility is not staffed.
Situated off the southeast Georgia coast, this 20-mile-long island has no bridge access, no telephone lines, no paved roads and no accommodations other than campsites and a handful of rooms at the Greyfield Inn, an elegant old Carnegie compound where the John F. Kennedy, Jr wedding party stayed and the reception was held.
In 1970, the National Park Service bought most of the island from the Carnegie family and later designated it a National Seashore. Small parts of the island remain private property, including Greyfield. About 35 people live on the island for some part of the year, and visitation is limited by the park service to 300 people a day, most of whom travel by ferry from St. Mary's, Ga.
Because the island's remarkable ecosystems -- saltwater marsh, maritime forest and high-dune beach -- are virtually untouched, environmentalists consider Cumberland one of the most treasured resources on the Eastern Seaboard.
