Before "What'll You Have" B&W....by Reid Callaway
The Varsity Dawn
Atlanta Landmark Art
Or I could have said, "No Breakfast" at the largest drive-in fast food restaurant in the world, This was shot at dawn before the help arrives to start preparing for a new day with two miles of hot dogs, a ton of onions, 2500 pounds of potatoes, 5000 fried pies and 300 gallons of chili are made from scratch daily.
Since 1928...
What'll you have!.... What'll you have!... is the constant chorus one hears over the crowd noise when you walk into The Varsity. The original Varsity was opened in 1928 by Frank Gordy and is still family run today.
Through their dedication to freshness, superior quality, advanced technology and serving the best fast food, The Varsity has gained a reputation that is known worldwide.
The original Varsity has grown into a two-story "Launching Pad" that sits on more than 5 acres or almost two city blocks and can accommodate 600 cars and over 800 people inside.
The Varsity and its other sister locations have become Atlanta landmarks known and loved by all from around the world.
Many of us who have grown up in Atlanta know this historic sign at the famous The Varsity restaurant. If you have ever been to Atlanta, while driving thru it is very hard to miss this sign standing near the Georgia Institute of Technology campus and Interstate Highway 75 and 85's north/south bound lanes as they pass thru Atlanta. Standing here since 1928 as a salute to the relationship the Coca-Cola Company has had with its partner The Varsity. I captured this image on a beautiful sky blue day in Atlanta with white clouds adding color where needed. Enjoy this great historic and famous Atlanta Signage and Landmark.
The Varsity is a restaurant chain, iconic in the modern culture of Atlanta, Georgia. The main branch of the chain is the largest drive-in fast food restaurant in the world. In addition, the main location is responsible for more retail sales of Coca-Cola, on an annual basis than any other single location in the world, a record which has stood for many years. There are now six other branches across metro Atlanta, and another near the University of Georgia in Athens. The restaurant also offers catering services to the metro Atlanta region for both corporate and non-corporate functions, going as far east as Conyers and Stone Mountain, Georgia.
Originally named "The Yellow Jacket,' The Varsity was established in 1928 at the corner of Luckie Street and Hemphill Avenue in Midtown Atlanta. Its founder, Frank Gordy, a Reinhardt University graduate, briefly attended The Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) but dropped out in 1925. Then, as now, the restaurant catered heavily to Georgia Tech students. As the business grew, Gordy was forced to move the restaurant to 61 North Avenue (on the northwest corner of Spring Street) to accommodate the crowds; the present structure now covers two city blocks. It was here that the name was changed to "The Varsity," reflecting his desire to expand to other college campuses. During the drive-in era, The Varsity began its curbside service, which continues to this day.
