Georgia-Pacific Tower Art
191 Peachtree Tower Art
Driving thru downtown Atlanta, Georgia at night on the I-75&85 connector, you can't miss seeing the Jesus Saves sign that stand atop the Big Bethel AME Church on Auburn Ave surrounded by the ever increasingly taller buildings around this famous and historic church.
Georgia-Pacific Tower is a 212.45 m (697.0 ft), skyscraper in downtown Atlanta. It contains 52 stories of office space and was finished in 1982. It was Atlanta's second tallest building from 1982 to 1987. It has a stair-like design that staggers down to the ground, and is clad in pink granite quarried from Marble Falls, Texas.
The tower is on the former site of the Loew's Grand Theatre, where the premiere for the 1939 film Gone with the Wind was held (133 Peachtree St. NE, near intersection of Peachtree and Forsyth streets).
The architectural firm that designed it was Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. The tower is the world headquarters of Georgia-Pacific. Other tenants include consulting firm McKinsey & Company and the downtown branch of the High Museum of Art, which opened in 1986.
191 Peachtree Tower…
191 Peachtree Tower is a 235 m (771 ft), 50-story skyscraper in Atlanta, Georgia. Designed by Johnson/Burgee Architects and Kendall/Heaton Associates Inc, the building was completed in 1990 and is the fourth tallest in the city, winning the BOMA Building of the Year Awards the next year, repeating in 1998 and 2003.
The towers two rooftop crowns composed of interwoven arches, domes and columns and illuminated at night comprise seven stories of the structure.
The building is located on the former site of the Hotel Majestic, which in the early 20th century was one of the city's major hotels.
Part of the Sweet Auburn district, Big Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church is believed to be the oldest predominantly African American congregation in the metropolitan Atlanta area. A pillar of the Auburn Avenue community, the church is known nationally and internationally for its religious pageant, Heaven Bound.
Founding
Big Bethel AME has congregational roots dating back to 1847. The original congregation was made up of slaves who were given permission to worship in the white Union Church. Members selected the name Bethel Tabernacle when construction was completed on their first church building in 1855. During the Civil War (1861-65), Bethel Tabernacle was used as a smallpox hospital. After the war, as African Methodism spread throughout the South, the church offered classes to newly freed African American children. In 1866 Bethel Tabernacle, led by the Reverend Joseph Wood, joined the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME Church) organization.
Throughout its long, dynamic history, Big Bethel has hosted a variety of well-known speakers, including U.S. president William Taft, education leader Mary McLeod Bethune, Georgia governor (later U.S. president) Jimmy Carter, South African president Nelson Mandela, and (future) U.S. president Bill Clinton. The church continues to fulfill its mission of providing spiritual guidance to its congregation while also playing a key role in the economic development and historic preservation of the Sweet Auburn neighborhood.
